Son œuvre fut très fortement influencée par Cézanne, Van Gogh, Braque, Matisse et certains grands maîtres comme Rembrandt et Vermeer. Nicolas de Staël est surtout reconnu pour l'usage de couleurs telles que l'orange et le bleu. Il se suicide en 1955, comme Van Gogh, l'un de ses maîtres.
