[synopsis] => For most, the first things that might come to mind are Pilgrims, turkeys, and the Mayflower. Yes, the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth in 1620 adhered to Puritan ideals, but the history of the Puritans goes much deeper. The Puritans were the direct result of the reaction created by the pseudo Reformation of England in the 16th century. The English Reformation did not initially spring from religious zeal, but from the selfish desires of Britain's king, Henry VIII. King Henry VIII wanted a new wife, and the pope would not allow him to use the machinery of the Catholic Church to dissolve their marriage. So King Henry broke with the Catholic Church, defied the pope, and declared himself head of the Church of England. The Church of England was largely reformed in name only, as it kept much of the traditions and rituals of Catholicism. The Protestant-leaning British clergy, especially those influenced by the teachings of John Calvin, wanted more reform than Henry wanted. allowed. The most zealous among them, those who wished to purify all semblance of Catholic tradition from English worship, were nicknamed "Puritans." This book traces the origin of these religious reformers in England and their final journey to America. Here you will learn how a Puritan sect, the Pilgrims, tried to establish a "shining city on a hill" for all the world to see. They were one of the few who dared to dream bigger things. This is the story of the Puritans. In this book, you will learn about: The Origins of the Puritans
The Mayflower
The First Puritan Settlements in America
The Early Puritan Leaders
The English Civil War
The Salem Witch Trials
The Great Awakening
The Puritans and the Revolutionary War
The Descendants of the Puritans
And much more.
